Hastings Cutoff Automobile Tour

We are excited to announce our, Saturday, May 22nd OCTA Tour along the Hastings Trail from Horseshoe Springs in Skull Valley to the Grayback Mountains on the eastern edge of the Salt Flats. This is a part of the trail where ruts, camps, and springs we visit today look like they did in 1846. There is a lot to see and do. We are fortunate to have Ray Kelsey of the BLM as our tour guide.

Put that date on your calendar!

  • Free and open to the public

  • Take your own vehicle

  • Route suitable for any SUV

Repeat of Crossroads Chapter Tour, October 24, 2020

There will be a "re-do" of the Hastings Cutoff Tour. About 10 of the people who couldn't make the October 10 tour have asked for another tour.

We'll meet at TA Travel Center, Tooele Exit 99 at 9:30 am.

Look for Connie Bauer’s black vintage Tahoe.

Anyone who didn't get enough on the 10th or would like to add insight or just wants to get on the trails again - come on!

Bring a lunch, snacks, water, binoculars if you have them, masks, shoes for short hikes, and no clean cars - gravel roads.

Any questions email Connie Bauer or Steve Allison. Please let us know if you're coming.

Crossroads Chapter Tour October 10, 2020

Hello Trails Pardners,

Our next tour, the 3rd in our series, will be Saturday, October 10th. We will begin where the Donner-Reed Party crossed the Jordan River, go through Tooele, Grantsville, and end at the east side of Skull Valley. There are awesome things to see along the way.

We will meet on the east side of the Jordan River on 2780 South street (about 1040 West) at 9 am. (Please see the attached directions and maps).

I am so excited about this tour because it seems like in the past we have skipped over the Salt Lake Valley.

Our intrepid tour guide Connie Baur will lead this tour.

We will be wearing masks and practicing social distancing. Please bring your lunch which we will be eating at the Benson Grist Mill.

Please send an email to Steve Allison to let him know you'll be coming.

Crossroads Historical Trails Tour

Crossroads Historical Trails Tour

On Saturday, August 22, we will sponsor a tour of the pioneer trails from the Weber River Crossing near Henefer, Utah, to the First Encampment site in the Salt Lake Valley. This trail will highlight the 1846 Donner Party, the early Utah Pioneers, and the three Pony Express stations along the way. This last 50 miles of the pioneer trail into the Salt Lake Valley covers some of the roughest terrain of the entire westward trek to Salt Lake. Our tour guide will be Connie Bauer. There will be other historians who will give reports along the way too. Please bring your camera, lunch, and plenty of water. (We will eat lunch at about noon.) Please carpool if you can.

Where to meet: Weber River Crossing Campground (see attached map)

When to meet: 9 am

Cost: Free

Approximate tour running time: 4 hours

Please RSVP to Steve Allison

RAILPOST INSTALLATION AND MINI-TOUR OF DONNER SPRING AREA

RAILPOST INSTALLATION AND MINI-TOUR OF DONNER SPRING AREA

There is going to be a Railpost party and everyone is invited.

On Saturday, September 28, Utah Crossroads members will be installing two new Railpost Markers along Pilot Mountain Road near Donner Spring. The first one will be placed near the National Park Service’s interpretive panel at the eastern base of Bidwell Pass. We will meet there at 10:00 AM. After placing the first Railpost we will move about ten miles north and plant the second one near Donner Spring.

After the work has been completed, we will take a tour of the area.  If all goes well, we will visit Donner Spring and a railpost at the edge of the mudflats east of the spring. Then we will go to Shibley Spring, Munsee Spring, Hall’s Spring, and possibly Bidwell Pass.  If time and road conditions permit, we will make our way to a non-trail-related rock formation that should prove interesting to all.

Participants will need to bring their lunch, whatever snacks they want, and plenty of water.

Vehicles:  You can drive to the new railpost sites in a normal family sedan but the tour will require a high clearance vehicle but not necessarily four-wheel-drive. Your tires must be in good condition because the roads we will be traveling on will be very rocky in some places.

Driving Directions: The driving time from the Salt Lake City Area should be about three hours. Take Interstate 80 westbound.  Leave I-80 at Exit 4.  Turn north.  At 4.5 miles from I-80 bear left.  At 7.7 miles cross the Utah-Nevada state line (at about this point the road turns to gravel and is usually very washboardy). At 14 miles come to the NPS panel on the left.

If you are interested in participating in this activity please contact Jess Petersen or Vic Heath before September 20th.
